Mendocino Earth Products is a local Ukiah-based company engaged in the production of compost made from discarded organic material such as grass, leaves, shrubbery and small branches.

The source of material used in making this compost is recyclable greenwaste and wood waste collected weekly in Mendocino and Lake Counties. Composting turns this unwanted material into a valuable resource that is valuable for general purpose gardening, farming and landscaping.

Composting is nature's way of recycling. Left alone, organic material will naturally decompose over time. At Mendocino Earth Products, a controlled process hastens this natural decomposition of organics. It starts first with grinding and screening of raw greenwaste and dry branches. Once this is done, the material is put into windrows and water added as necessary. These windrows are turned to help aerate the piles and allow natural microorganisms to begin breaking down the green materials. Composting windrows reach high temperatures which helps kill weed seeds and pathogens and speeds up the decomposition process. Generally, decomposition is complete and compost is ready within three months after the process has started.

The final compost product is screened again to assure that any leftover large pieces of woody material are removed. The final product is a uniform, darkish brown, crumbly product that has an earthy aroma.

By using compost produced from discarded municipal greenwaste and woodwaste the recycling loop is truly closed and materials are diverted from landfilling. It is truly a sustainable practice.

The Benefits of Using Compost

-Compost adds organic material to soils making these soils more productive and optimal for plant vigor.

-Compost helps sandy soils retain moisture and builds soil structure allowing plants to utilize natural nutrients in soil. This helps to reduce water consumption. In hard or clay soils, compost improves drainage.

-Compost improves aeration to the root zone of plants.

-Compost helps reduce topsoil erosion and minimizes the need for chemical fertilizers.

Application Guide:

Application rates will vary upon soil type. In general, two to three inches of compost tilled into the top twelve inches of soil will be sufficient for a healthy garden or planting area.
